Join us April 9th as Dan Krause, Ph.D., Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management in the College of Business at Colorado State University, discusses his research on the recent economic downturn, also called the "Great Recession," and its effects on companies' relationships with their most important suppliers.
The research Dan conducted with Dr. Lisa Ellram, of Miami University focuses on several dyadic relationships, from interviews of company executives, which occurred during and after the economic downturn. Krause and Ellram (2014) report that when amplified financial pressures affected buyer-supplier relationships, "the suppliers became more dependent on their customers, that is, they desperately needed these companies' business." Some companies behaved more cooperatively toward their most important suppliers and found ways to jointly confront the effects of the downturn, while others responded by behaving competitively to maximize their individual outcomes. Krause and Ellram note that preexisting competitive priorities (e.g., a cost focus) may ultimately determine whether these relationships evolved or devolved.

Dan's industry experience includes positions in quality assurance and purchasing. His research interests include inter-organizational relationships, supplier development, supplier involvement in new product development, and sustainability efforts in supply chains. His research activities have taken him to visit companies in the USA, Canada, Europe (including Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Switzerland), UK, Japan and Korea. He has provided executive education to many companies including LG, ATK, Bayer, Cessna, Steelcase, and Vitro Corporation.
Before arriving at CSU, Dan taught at several other universities including the University of Victoria (B.C., Canada), Queen's University Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK), Arizona State University and Michigan State University. He has taught supply chain and operations courses at all levels, including doctoral, MBA and undergraduate. He has been a visiting professor at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, UK and at WHU, Otto Beisheim School of Management, Vallendar, Germany.
